Angels Gate Cultural Center (AGCC) and the Marine Mammal Care Center (MMCC) are collaborating on monthly Science & Art Workshops! Every first Saturday of the Month.
Free for all, kids and adults, all ages welcome.
Join us for an afternoon of science and art!
We are living in an era of increasingly severe Toxic Algae Blooms, ocean acidification, and deoxygenation, leading to the widespread poisoning of marine life, including fish, seals, sea lions, dolphins, and sea birds. The factors contributing to these toxic blooms are complex, but experts agree that sea temperature rise and anthropogenic nutrient pollution in runoff water are significant factors.
-Ashton S. Phillips
ArtLab will start with a MMCC talk about how watershed health and ocean health helps our sea life thrive. Artist-Teacher Ashton S. Phillips will then lead participants in his art workshop, Weeds, Seeds, and Fungi: Interspecies Art and Action in a Time of Toxic Algae!
This all-ages workshop will introduce participants to some of the factors that contribute to nutrient pollution and work through some creative ways that artists and community members can modify their practices and behaviors to reduce their own nutrient-pollution footprint, while staying engaged in the longterm health of our watershed.
Join Artist-Teacher Ashton as participants explore a native plant seed station with materials to build and decorate your own seed packets to take home and plant; Build-your-own miniature, runoff-reducing garden in a plantable, biodegradable pot; and Make and create with your own sustainable paint, derived from local weeds and invasive plants.
We can not wait to have you join us!
All supplies will be provided and everyone is welcome.
ArtLab is back at the MMCC in-person! Please meet us in the classroom at MMCC before 1 PM to claim your reservation. Masks preferred, not required. All ages welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
The event will begin promptly at 1pm.
