Angels Gate Cultural Center is pleased to present They Fly Like Flowers: Works by Young Artists & Poets, an exhibition of Artists-in-Classrooms student artwork. They Fly Like Flowers: Works by Young Artists & Poets features multimedia works from second and third grade visual arts classes, as well as poetry and prose from fourth and fifth grade creative writing classes. The show name, They Fly Like Flowers, comes from the final line of haiku written by a fifth-grader at Webster Elementary School.
The exhibition will be open to the public with a reception during Angels Gate’s Open Studios Day on Saturday, April 7th from 12-4pm, and will be on view until May 19, 2018 in Angels Gate’s downstairs galleries. During Open Studios Day, over 40 Angels Gate studio artists will open their doors for the afternoon. Community members can see their studio space, hear about their art practice, and create their own art in workshops throughout the day. Also opening on April 7th in Angels Gate’s upstairs galleries is Marina del Pedro, an exhibition curated by artist Tim Maxeiner that includes artwork from students at the Boys & Girls Club of the Los Angeles Harbor, historical material from the San Pedro Bay Historical Society archives, community submissions, as well as work by local artists.
Angels Gate’s Artists-in-Classrooms program provides quality, in-depth instruction in the visual and performing arts to students K-12 throughout the Harbor Region. Professional artists teach all classes during 12-week in-school residencies. Visual arts lessons offer students opportunities to explore the creative process through drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, and other 2- and 3-D art forms. Writing classes blend theatre, poetry, and creative prose together to prepare students for their middle school writing careers.
They Fly Like Flowers: Works by Young Artists & Poets features among other works second grade students’ paper dragon masks celebrating Chinese New Year, and third grade “Cutouts,” inspired by French artist Henri Matisse. Second grade printmaking and watercolors, and third grade digital photography and textile sculptures will also be among the work on display.
