Angels Gate Cultural Center brings art and culture to our communities through interactive classes, gallery exhibits of both local and international artists, professional artists’ studios, arts education programs in the schools, and cultural events.

We are growing and evolving and need a leader for our education initiatives.

Arts education is a major part of our mission. We have an ambitious and growing Artists in Classroom program in over 120 classrooms and in the San Pedro Boys and Girls Club partner locations. We also have extensive classes in our hilltop facility, overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island. We are members of and participate in many community-based arts initiatives including the newly state designated cultural district.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the successful candidate will collaborate with the stakeholder community to keep all these program on course, vibrant and growing. This is an opportunity to grow the vision, bring in new classes and expand our family of school partners, increase the number of participants, help the teachers to become even more effective and to be a vibrant advocate for arts education in our communities.

The 11 buildings at Angels Gate were originally pre-WWII barracks at Ft. McArthur, a costal defense artillery site overlooking one of the most spectacular vistas on the California coastline. In 1985, these barracks were converted to artists’ studios which are now rented to 50 artists for well below market rates.

It is a sanctuary for artists, but also has a vigorous public face through our education programs. We hold a leadership position in the extensive San Pedro, CA arts community.

Angels Gate is governed by a committed and supportive board, many of whose members are artists, ranging from local to internationally known.

The ideal candidate is looking for a work family. We have lots of hard work that needs to be done, and many collaborators to help. The arts education programs are mature and developed, and are currently managed by the Executive Director.

The successful candidate will want to grow these programs with new energy. The successful candidate will also enter into productive collaborations with the talented and dedicated Angels Gate staff.

This position offers the unusual opportunity to take over a mature program but then enhance it, giving it greater scope and depth, while working with a team to grow a long-standing arts organization.

The compensation for this position will be commensurate with the successful candidate’s background, but in the context of the economic world of small arts non-profits. Medical and dental benefits are included.
