A Wake at the Gate!

Wow, what an incredible evening!! On Saturday, October 22, 2016 Angels Gate Cultural Center hosted its first fundraiser. Guess what? We SOLD OUT and surpassed our fundraising goal!!! It was a huge success. If you weren’t able to join us, here’s what you missed…

The inaugural A Wake at the Gate is the brainchild of board member/artist Wendy Milner-Calloway and studio artist representative Phoebe Barnum. What began as a joke and private conversation between the two one year ago, grew into a community event for artists by artists and their friends.

As the sun began to set on October 22nd, guests arrived dressed in Victorian styled traditional garb. They were greeted by the melodic sounds of the Mourners where they checked in with Angels Gate Cultural Center staff – received drinking tickets and beautifully hand crafted mourning badges.

Upon entry, “the living” were treated to tables draped in white linens and chantilly lace with tiers of delectable hor d’oeuvres provided by local businesswoman and caterer Susan McKenna.

As guests enjoyed libations prepared by Steve from Iguana Kelly’s, they quickly found their way to our photo booth (a wall mounted coffin) where costumes were provided and their images captured in warm sepia tones.

Our very own Logan Fox was on hand providing beautifully hand drawn portraits to all.

As the evening progressed, guests took turns creating epitaphs on our Obituary Wall. Artists playfully mixed and matched removable velcro words and strung interesting sentences and statements.

And, of course, the Exquisite Corpse was artfully displayed with distinctive artwork created and donated by the studio artists of Angels Gate Cultural Center. We were thrilled to witness the silent auction bidding and sales throughout the evening.

And, there was still more! The evening culminated outdoors on the bluff with belly dancers and fire wranglers who mesmerized a captive audience with movement and the magical element of fire set against the dark evening skies.

A great time was had by all — special thanks to our fearless leader Amy Eriksen for her leadership and a huge round of applause for the incomparable Wendy Milner-Calloway and Phoebe Barnum for bringing their time, talent, and creativity to bringing this board driven event to fruition. Also, we can’t forget all of our amazing artists who contributed to the success of this event!

Onward & Upward
